Empowering Through Literacy

About Us

We have been working with the Craigmillar community to support people’s literacy skills since 1998. We work with babies, children, young people, parents and carers and other adults to achieve our vision that every person is empowered through literacy in the community of Craigmillar.

Books For Babies

Craigmillar Books for Babies supports families with babies and young children to develop communication and literacy skills through books, stories, rhymes and songs.

Stories For Sharing

Craigmillar Stories for Sharing encourages a fun and creative approach to literacy through storytelling. Children aged 4-12 and parents/carers can explore and discover stories, books, reading and writing together.

Express Yourself!

Express Yourself! is a literacy project for children and young people aged 12-16. This is a new programme that will share creative ways to make sense of the world, fostering connection and a sense of belonging.

Craigmillar is a community in the east of Edinburgh. It is a vibrant, diverse community with a long history of community arts, activism and people supporting each other. It is home to the magnificent Craigmillar Castle and several beautiful green spaces. Our work takes place in the communities of Craigmillar, Niddrie, Bingham and Magdalene.

Our work is supported by a diverse range of funders. We are grateful for their support and for the support we receive from local businesses and individuals.

"We aim to build resilience and social capital in our community, enabling connections to be made between people. We support and encourage a sense of belonging and identity"

Our Work

Our work is relationship-based and embedded in the community. We work in partnership with individuals and agencies including children and young people, parents and carers, health visitors, speech and language therapists, the local library, early years settings, schools and community groups.
