Family Support at Home

What We Do

Family Support at Home is a home visiting programme for families who live in the Craigmillar area. We support parents/carers to explore sharing books and songs with their wee ones. We also share our key messages on how best to support children’s development.

Serve & Return

We believe ‘serve and return’ interactions are important. ‘Serve and return’ is defined by the Harvard Centre for the Developing Child as,
“When an infant or young child babbles, gestures, or cries, and an adult responds appropriately with eye contact, words, or a hug, neural connections are built and strengthened in the child’s brain that support the development of communication and social skills.”

As part of ‘Family Support at Home’, we discuss ‘serve and return’ interactions covering 5 steps

    • Share the focus
    • Support and encourage
    • Name it!
    • Take turns, back and forth
    • Practice endings and beginnings

    Referrals for Family Support

Referrals for Family Support at Home can be made by health visitors, speech and language therapists, families, or any other partner in the area. The visits are planned with the families themselves and we can visit a family from birth until the child turns 4.

"The kids are always excited to receive new storybooks and to have a play session. They always look forward to Michelle coming down or video calling for the singing sessions. It's been a great help for all the family."
